A Prayer for When Anxiety Won't Let You Rest | Philippians 4:6-7

Monday, November 16, 2026 · Psalm 94:19 · Philippians 4:6-7 (BSB)

The video for this devotional goes live November 16. You can read and pray it below now.

It’s late. Everyone else is asleep. And your mind is running the same three worries in a loop, faster every time.

If that’s you tonight, or this morning, stay here a few minutes.

When, not if

A lot of us believe anxious Christians are failing Christians. Listen to what the psalmist wrote:

When anxiety overwhelms me, Your consolation delights my soul.

Psalm 94:19 (BSB)

When. Not if. The person who wrote that loved God, and anxiety still overwhelmed him. The verse doesn’t scold him for it. It tells you where he took it. He took it straight to God, and God met him there with comfort.

Move the worry

Be anxious for nothing, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Philippians 4:6–7 (BSB)

Paul wrote that from a prison, not a vacation. And look at what he actually asks you to do. Not stop feeling. Just move the worry: out of the loop in your head and into a request in front of God. In everything. Even the small, silly-sounding things. Especially those.

The promise isn’t that the problem disappears by morning. It’s that God’s peace will stand guard over your heart and your mind, like a soldier at a door. The worry can knock. It doesn’t get to move in.

Try this today

Say your worry out loud in one sentence. Just one. Then add four words: “Lord, I’m handing this over.” That’s the prayer and petition. The thanksgiving comes next, in the prayer below.

Pray this

Father, You see me right now, wide awake, holding more than I can carry. I'm not going to pretend I'm fine. My mind keeps running ahead to things that haven't even happened.

So I bring them to You, one at a time. This is the one that scares me most. Lord, I'm handing it over.

Thank You that You are not tired of me. Thank You that You were already in tomorrow before I started worrying about it. Thank You for every time You carried me before, even the times I didn't notice until later.

Jesus, You said Your peace is different from the world's peace. I want that peace. Not a feeling I have to manufacture, but You, standing guard over my heart and my mind tonight.

Holy Spirit, when the loop starts again, and it probably will, remind me of this moment. Remind me that I already gave it away.

And for anyone whose anxiety has gotten too heavy to carry alone, give them the courage to tell someone. A friend, a pastor, a doctor. That's not weakness. That's wisdom.

Quiet my body. Slow my breathing. Let me rest, because You don't sleep, and You've got this.

In Jesus' name, amen.
